76084 BR Staff Reunion

Whilst resident on the East Lancashire Railway in the first quarter of 2017 being close to where 76084 was built and subsequently operated, the decision was taken by the Board of Directors to host a reunion of those British Railways staff involved in her build and operation.

This reunion was advertised through national magazines and regional/local newspapers. The response was good. The Shed staff from Lower Darwen have regular reunions and contact was made with the organisers to ensure all possible ex-BR staff were reached.

The date was set for Saturday, 4 March 2017. The management of the ELR were most helpful and on the day seats were reserved in the first coach behind 76084 on the first departure from Bury Bolton Street station. Having experienced the quality of the ELR Dining Experience the catering company utilised (Delicious at the Fusiliers) was contacted to provide lunch on board the train.

On the afternoon of the day before the event BBC North West Tonight contacted us eventually deciding to film the occasion for the local evening news.

Some 27 ex-BR staff attended over the day with lots of tales to tell about their time and involvement with 76084. Two brothers, one a coppersmith the other a boilersmoth, who both built 76084 were present. Jim Firth, now 79 years young, had a ride on the footplate - his first ever - which brought a tear to his eye.

Those present had several round trips on the ELR with very tasty sandwiches and sausage rolls arriving on que. And the film crew did appear. Clip on the video belo to see what was broadcast on the same evening as the reunion took place.

On behalf of my brother John and myself could I please thank you so much for inviting us to ride on 76084. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience especially riding on the footplate.

It was a priviledge to have served our time as apprentices on these magnificent engines.
